Journey to the heart of energy – How a marine turbine works


A marine turbine
generates electricity, using the force
of sea or river currents, a free and abundant
renewable energy source. Using a barge, the marine turbine fixed to a metal structure is submerged,
then placed on the seabed. The marine turbine comprises
a fixed part, the stator, and a moving part, the rotor on which blades are fixed. The force of the water makes the blades
move, causing the rotor to rotate. The interaction between the
electromagnets and the copper wire coils then generates an electric current. The current generated is converted
into direct current by a converter and is transmitted
through an underwater cable to the land. Converted back into alternating current,
it is then boosted to 20,000 volts in order to be delivered
to the electricity distribution network. Regular maintenance and inspection
ensure the marine turbines
remain fully operational. Marine power production
does not generate greenhouse gases. Reliable and predictable,
it can be used continuously to meet electricity needs of the year.

    Marine Turbines also won't last more than 5 years without sea organisms growing all over it. Maintenance is impossibly costly and connecting a cluster to them to the Grid is a real problem. It remains a con-job that it was about 30 years ago.
