Overview | SCE Tehachapi Renewable Transmission Project

So the TRTP project was actually a long-term project that looked at all the ways we can bring in renewable power from the Tehachapi region. There’s wind resources up in the Tehachapi’s that need to reach the load base here in Southern California. So Edison developed the project to bring in that power and transmit it to everyone in our service territory. So the project starts up north in the Tehachapi’s which is the north end of the Antelope Valley. Almost 200 miles from here. Bringing in all that renewables we had to build a first substation up in there called Windhub. We’re near the Edison Windhub Substation which was the first major large Substation built as part of the Tehachapi Renewable Transmission Project. It’s sort of in the heart of the wind area. You can see there’s turbines all around us. So the Tehachapi Renewable Project is capable of delivering 4,500 megawatts of energy from this area down to the load centers in Southern California. That’s enough energy to power approximately 3 million homes. There are wind farms ringing the Antelope Valley. They all, pretty much everything that comes out of the Antelope Valley is tying into the power system through TRTP. We are just south of the Angeles National Forest. The lines behind me come south out of the Angeles National Forest and into the basin from the Tehachapi project. The forest is a pretty unique scenario. Most people don’t think that there’s any rugged territory around Los Angeles but the parts of the of the Angeles National Forest we went through were pretty rugged and in most of those locations we didn’t have adequate access roads. In some spots we didn’t have road access at all so we had to use helicopters. The environmental components of the project very important because you know a) we’re building a line that’s going to be transporting renewable energy right so it has a green purpose in general. But you know we can install this green line in a way that doesn’t really damage the environment. The project also protected the environment by completing restoration activities after work. Restoration activities include replacement of education that was removed to support our construction. So right now for the next 10 years Edison is going to be spending considerable amount of time and effort of replanting the forest. Today we’re in the city of Chino Hills and behind me is the West Transition station which is the starting point of the underground project, the TRTP underground project. Back in July of 2013 the Public Utilities Commission made a decision to approve this portion of the line into an underground configuration. Some of the challenges with going underground with this cable was, the biggest thing is that it’s been done before or never been done in North America. When we started construction of this project it looks similar to some of the hillsides out here in Chino Hills. We actually manufactured this slope. We cut a hundred and seventy thousand cubic yards of material and we filled with the sixty thousand cubic yards of material. So the cable was pulled through using a specialized piece of equipment and pulled back in through the conduit and it then is spliced together in the vaults when you have two complete sections. We’re at the Mira Loma Substation. This is effectively the southern terminus of all of the TRTP project. This is where we finally bring it all that renewable power. Mira Loma brings in power up to 500,000 volts which is way more powerful than you can use in your home. So we have transformers here that will step that down to something that’s more usable say something like around 12,000 volts before it actually steps down to about a hundred and ten volts in your home. Getting projects like this moving it sets trends in the industry and that’s really important because it really starts moving the industry and showing how it is possible to bring in more renewables, it is possible to operate a system that has a large capacity of it part of renewables. It’s something that’s important to me knowing that I contributed to helping the environment. It’s an environment that i’m going to leave to my family and children. It’s really important part of leaving a legacy, basically. Infrastructure development like this is pretty important for California’s future we have an expanding population in LA basin and I’m part of that and it’s really important to me to make sure that we have access to energy that doesn’t come from fossil fuels. That we have access to energy that comes from renewable sources. Within the forest we have two lines now that help connect energy from the Tehachapi wind resource area to the LA basin. So if there was a fire we and we have to take an outage on the line, we would have to be able to back up another line. I think the thing that we’re most proud of as a project team representing Southern California Edison, is that this is the first of its kind in North America and we successfully did something that people were were questioning whether or not it could be done. And we’ve proven that you can do this and it took a large team of people to do it and we came together with a common goal that we were going to do the best underground project in the country and the world and I think that’s what we’ve done. So what does this mean? well to all our customers in our 50,000 square mile service territory, no matter where you are this renewable power once it gets into the system is available to everybody. So whether you’re charging your cell phone, charging your car, flipping on a light switch, making a cup of coffee, you all have ready access to that renewable power
